When is the registration deadline?

Early registration closes at midnight on May 26, 2018. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis and we cannot guarantee any accommodations without deposit. After May 26, the cost per person will increase $250.

I completed my registration and paid the deposit. What happens next?

You will receive an invoice for the remaining balance. Final payment is due within 14 days of your registration.

What if I have to cancel my registration?

The 20% deposit per person is non-refundable. Guests who cancel prior to June 1 will receive their payment (less the deposit). Guests that cancel after June 1 will forfeit all payments.

Does The Zawiyah accept applications for volunteers, and/or offer scholarships or discounts to attend the retreat?

At this time, we regret that we are not be able to offer any volunteer opportunities or scholarships.


What is included in the cost?

Tuition, lodging, transportation to/from the airport (and off-campus apartments, if applicable) and all meals and snacks are included in the cost. When possible, meals are locally sourced and organic, with minimal processing and preservatives.

What sort of schedule can we expect at the retreat?

Each day will include approximately 6 hours of instruction punctuated with meals, prayer times, breaks and optional activities. There will also be one day of leisure with optional activities.

What will the course subjects be?

We will explore models of communal living and deepen our engagement with permaculture and regenerative agriculture (filaha). We will also discover ways to create skilled, self-sufficient, and ethically sound land-based communities that embody the prophetic worldview.

Will we have personal time with the Shuyukh?

The Zawiyah aims to create a personal, intimate space with our scholars, as such there are many opportunities outside of class to enjoy their presence. We will do our best to accommodate short private sessions. Times are available on a first come, first serve basis, as the program permits. Please sign up upon arrival.

Are there children's activities?

There will be special programming for children ages 3-12 that runs parallel with the adult sessions. Children will explore the grounds and attend unique creative workshops.

Are there activities for adults?

There are opportunities for hiking, fishing, archery and swimming on the Rosales property. Please bring appropriate clothing and shoes.

How can I prepare for the classes?

A list of recommended readings from our scholars will be provided to registered guests. Participants are expected to attend classes and take notes as necessary.


Is there a group flight to Madrid?

We are not offering a group flight from Chicago this year.

What are the dates we should travel?

For international flights, participants should plan to depart June 30 for arrival on the morning of July 1. Plan for your return flight late morning or afternoon on July 10.

If I arrive to the retreat late or depart the retreat early, how will I get to/from the airport?

The package price includes group transportation to/from Madrid airport on the designated dates and times. Arrivals or departures outside of this timeframe will be at your own cost.

Taxis to Madrid take about 5 hours and cost approximately 300 Euros each way. Car rentals for the week typically cost around the same amount.

Who do I contact to buy my plane tickets?

We often find that online ticketing websites (Kayak, Expedia and the like) have the best fares. Plan to arrive on the morning of July 1 and depart the late morning or afternoon of July 10.

What are the transportation options to/from the Madrid airport?

The land package price includes group transportation to/from the Madrid Airport at specific dates and times. Bus travel from the Madrid Airport to Rosales is approximately 5 hours.

BUS 1: Departs Madrid at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 1. This is the primary bus for on-time arrival to Rosales.

BUS 2: Departs Madrid 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 1. This bus will arrive in Rosales in the late evening.

Participants should plan on landing in Madrid at least 2 hours prior to their scheduled bus, as buses are unable to wait for delayed flights. You are responsible for meeting your bus at the Madrid airport. Participants who are unable to travel on either bus will need to make their own travel arrangements to Rosales.


BUS 1: Departs Rosales at 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 10 for flights departing from Madrid late morning or early afternoon on Tuesday.

BUS 2: Departs Rosales 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 10. This bus will arrive in Madrid mid afternoon.

Plan to arrive at least 2.5 hours before your flight. Please allow for travel delays when booking your departing flight from Madrid.

Note: Bus 1 departs in the middle of the night on Monday.


If I have food allergies or restrictions, will an alternate meal be available?

There will be a variety of foods at each meal, including, but not limited to, fruits, vegetables, proteins and grains. Ingredients for each dish will be available upon request.

Is there a space for women who cannot enter the Musallah?

Women can sit in the area directly behind the Musallah and still participate in class.

Will I have personal time to sight-see?

There will be one designated day for leisure, with optional activities. Activity options will be sent to participants prior to the retreat.

Will the classes be recorded? Can I use a personal recording device?

Classes will be recorded, but not available for public distribution. Any personal audio or visual recording is strictly prohibited.

Is there WiFi availble?

Cell coverage is limited. WiFi is limited and only available in the Rosales cafeteria.
